Our Music 2017-18

An exciting new project has been underway since September in two of Wolverhampton’s Special Schools. “Our Music” is a project run by Wolverhampton Music Education Hub and has been made possible by the awarding of a two year grant from Youth Music. Through “Our Music”, Wolverhampton Music Service teachers have been working with young musicians to develop their confidence, group-working, awareness of the needs of others, as well as their own musical interests and skills. Young musicians will be working towards completion of Arts Award by the summer and will have opportunities to explore a wide range of musical styles through listening, performing and composing their own music.

“Our Music” embraces partnership working and this includes an exciting Spring term phase of the project involving joint music-making with young musicians from mainstream secondary schools. Music Service teachers will be joined by members of Rockschool Music Limited and they will work together to facilitate music-making in a band setting. There will be showcases of this exciting work at the end of the spring term.

Throughout the first year of the project, Black Country Music Education Hubs will benefit from working alongside a practitioner from Soundabout who will share expertise and help to promote accessible, inclusive, high quality music provision for young people with additional needs. A networking group has been set up for music teachers across the Black Country Music Hubs and through this they are able to share resources and good practice and be signposted to latest information and research relating to teaching music in a SEN/D setting.
