Wolverhampton Music Education Hub Strives to offer enhanced opportunities for children and young people across the city whether they currently learn an instrument or have a passion for music.
The hub offers and presents a variety of activities during the academic year. They are constantly evolving with new ideas added regularly. This is a selection of this year’s events, workshops and concerts.
Year 10 Rock Project Rockschool Music
Rockschool Music will lead this project that takes place during the Autumn Term. During the programme of workshops music students from Year 10 will work with musicians from Rockschool Music on a chosen theme over a period of four visits to their school. Themes that can be covered include; Performing in a Band, Original Composition and Recording a Song. All work will be recorded onto CD format for the students to use for their GCSE work.
All schools, teachers and pupils that take part in these workshops will be invited to take part in a Showcase Performance at Newhampton Arts Centre. This year the showcase event will on Wednesday 4th December 2013.
Jazz Workshops Jazz at The Arena
A series of three workshops (one each school term) will be aimed at instrumental players, of at least grade 4 standard, and will focus on rehearsal and performance techniques with a special emphasis on jazz improvisation. The events will also give a valuable insight for school staff into the running of a jazz ensemble in school.
The workshops will be run at The Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton and supported by Jazz@Wolverhampton. Each of the afternoon workshops will be run by professional jazz performers who have been engaged by The Arena Theatre for a performance on the same evening. Participating students will also be invited to the evening performance, the first one being on Saturday 7th December with Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble.
Brass Workshop Polyphonic Brass
Polyphonic Brass are a professional brass group based in Manchester who have a lot of experience of working with pupils in schools. This year they will work with some of our younger brass players for a day and present a shared concert in the evening. In the concert the pupils will play music learnt during the workshop and Polyphonic Brass will perform for the pupils and their parents.
Woodwind Workshop Royal Northern College of Music
Woodwind players from Wolverhampton will work with specialist woodwind teachers and present a shared concert with performers from the Royal Northern College of Music for parents to attend in the evening. This year the experience will be offered to saxophone players.
Drum Kit Workshop Craig Blundell
Two professional drum kit players, including Craig Blundell, will deliver this workshop which last year proved to be truly inspirational for all who attended. The course will end with a shared evening concert for parents and students alike.
String Workshop Leo String Quartet
The Leo String Quartet are all professional players in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), and will work with string pupils of grade 5 standard and above throughout the course. In the evening they will present a shared concert for parents.
Guitar Workshop Modern Guitar Trio
The Modern Guitar Trio will be our guests for this workshop for guitar players. The trio will work with young guitar students from the city alongside our own guitar staff from Wolverhampton Music Service. In the evening a joint concert given by pupils and the Modern Guitar Trio will be performed to parents of all who have attended the workshop.
